Which version of Windows Server should I buy in 2026?
- Windows Server 2025: the current version. General support until 14 November 2029 and extended until 15 November 2034. This is the recommended option for a new server or for migrating from Server 2016, which will no longer be supported on 12 January 2027.
- Windows Server 2022 Standard: security updates up to 14 October 2031. The best value option if your programmes are already certified for 2022.
Standard or Datacentre: the difference is just one line
Standard allows 2 virtual machines per licence; Data centre, unlimited virtual machines on that server. If you do little or no virtualisation, the Standard plan is sufficient.
How Windows Server is licensed
Windows Server is licensed by cluster: the basic licence covers one server up to 16 cores. Furthermore, every user or device that connects requires a Windows Server CAL, and if you access it via Remote Desktop, a RDS CAL. If you’re unsure how many licences you need, please contact us before purchasing and we’ll work it out for you.
